July 6
Whew, last week was a blur getting back to work, rehearsing and having leadership meetings.
Below are some thoughts that resonated from the Symposium relating to student leadership and how we can continue to improve. Sid and Ross have led 3 hours of leadership meetings, sharing insights gained from their experience in Indiana. They will continue at our leadership meeting on July 14 3 p.m.
From Dr. Tim …
People are more important then titles
90% of leadership is based on attitude
Can't lead others till you can lead yourself
Leaders are measured by what you give.
You can only give what you have.
4 levels of leadership
1. I lead - you follow
2. I lead - you help
3. You lead – I help
4. You lead – I follow
Scott Lang
The more you give, the more you get
Music and leadership is win / win
Don't ever quit
Below is a 6 minute video that illustrates an example of unexpected positive consequences of being kind and funny to people in a new situation.

Last week at our rehearsals …
Students now have all 4 of the pieces for our field show and 5 stand tunes. The show theme has been chosen "Na Mele O Ke Kai" – Music of the Sea via the selections
1. The Ballade of Gilligan's Isle
2. Popeye the Sailor Man
3. Pirates of the Carribean
4. Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai
This weekend will have rehearsals for both the drum line and color guard from 9am-11am.
Uniform fittings will take place from 1-4 p.m. (by appointment) almost all students who have attended evening rehearsals have appointments. If students do not have an appointment, contact Hunter (or student leader to get Hunter's information) and he will assign a time for you to be fitted.
Starting in acclimations this week, students will begin to learn a 5 set mini-drill that will help them develop a framework to learn our field show. They will apply the basics of learning drill to ensure their success for the upcoming longer season. Along with playing their instrument while moving this will help them become aware the multiple levels of responsibility of marching and playing.
Seawind Invoices
Invoices for band camp have been sent out from Seawind via email. Please help take care of those responsibilities. They are a great company to work with and we want to keep that relationship strong. There is also a deposit for the Tournament of Roses Parade due on Friday, July 17.
Field Show Design
Because we will be performing our field show at the Tournament of Roses Parade, the show's drill will be designed to allow the 80% participating to perform without holes. Those that have registered for the parade will be placed into performing slots that will remain integral when the other performers are removed. This gives all the students an opportunity to perform during the regular season while allowing the majority to continue without re-learning the entire show.
Tournament of Roses Parade Punavision story.
Ross Matlin put together a story for Punavision describing the President's visit in May. A little more perspective on what we are getting ourselves into. It is all very exciting!
