Aloha all, I wanted to offer a reminder that registration is taking place for the 2016 Rose Parade. There is another deposit due Friday April 17. Timely registration allows us and Seawind to best prepare for the trip. Please check the Rose Parade tab of the website or the Seawind website for more registration information.
Questions have come up regarding fund raising opportunities. Punahou believes strongly in protecting the students' and parents' time by finding alternate forms of support instead of offering fund raising opportunities. As we were putting the trip cost together, the school pledged to provide transportation for all of the instruments (a cost of about $85 per student). They have additionally pledged a significant aid package to the entire band. The specific individual award per student will not be known until we have our final student numbers for travel. However, in the past, this award has been in the ballpark of $250. This amount is close to what students have received in total from past fundraising efforts. This financial support from the school will make the last payment reduced. Trust me, it takes a lot of selling cheese and sausage, huli huli chicken or name your fundraiser to provide that type of support for a group this large. The band is quite fortunate to have such robust financial support from the school.
For inquiring minds, below is a link to see the other Hawaii band that most recently participated in the parade. Here is a clip of Maui High School performing in this year's Rose parade.

The marching band club has met several times to provide input regarding a show theme. It will be centered on "Music of the Sea" with possible selections including Little Mermaid, Pirates of the Caribbean, Titanic, Perfect Storm, Hunt for Red October, Jaws and others. We now begin the process of working to procure rights to use and arrange the music. Because we are splicing more pieces together it is a more complicated process to get the music. We will have one more meeting to finalize input on parade music, hopefully on April 16.
After that there will be some drum major clinics leading to auditions in May. Audition exercises are on the marching band moodle page. The remaining leadership positions will be selected in late May or very early June.
The drumline had an opportunity to meet in March to start working on exercises. They will meet again on April 11 from 9-11 am. They will be auditioning in late May for specific spots on the 2015 drumline.
The colorguard will be much larger this year due to student work in recruiting. Bravo to those students for sharing their passion of marching band with their friends. We will have a rehearsal day on May 16 from 8-10 am in Forrest Hall to help them with a number of the exercises and develop a stronger understanding what we will be doing this next season.
