The band has gone through tremendous growth in the last 4 rehearsals! Excitement has caught throughout the band and we really seem to have everyone's full attention. We only have 3 rehearsals to go before we leave for the Rose Parade. A couple of technical details left to address, but lots of endurance to build. We want the students to enjoy the entire parade and finish strong!
Rose Parade Uniforms
Plans have changed regarding the uniforms. After further, further consideration we want to collect and ship all of the uniforms together. Monday at noon we will continue to collect the uniforms and place them in cardboard shipping boxes. The following parts are expected. All parts are required for participation.
Right now we think the parade will start between 40 and 45 degrees and get warmer as we continue. Carefully consider the amount of additional clothing worn below the uniform and shirt. Many students who wear many layers experience discomfort from being too hot. We will have some rehearsals so that students can acclimate to temperature and experiment with layers. Think about options under the jacket.
Safety
As Mr. Au referenced in the meeting last night below is most of the email we received from Rich Chinen '76. We are confident in the work they have done and continue to do to plan and provide for our safety.

Dear Jim and Mark:
I learned this morning in our Thursday that the Punahou marching band family is concerned about the safety and security of the band’s participation in the 2016 Tournament of Roses. Understandably, we are all concerned about the safety and security of all of our participants, volunteers and spectators. Since 9/11 in particular, extra public safety and security measures have been implemented for our events. In our meeting this morning, we are informed that there are no specific threats to our events on January 1st. Generally speaking, we are on high alert due to worldwide events from Paris to San Bernardino to various school districts across the country.
As the immediate past President of the Tournament of Roses, my primary roles are as Football committee chair and Incident Commander of our Emergency Operations Center off the parade site. My duty during the parade will be to sit with operational committee liaisons and members of various agencies to make sure that everything is safe and secure on and around the parade route, and in the event of any incident, make necessary decisions and coordinate the communication of accurate and timely information with the public. Throughout the year, my role is to perform due diligence to foresee potential hazards and threats that could impact the Parade and the safety and health of our participants. We have been in consistent and frequent communication with local, county, state and federal agencies. We have spent considerable time and energy in asking questions about safety and security that everyone is asking. At the end of the day, I will have the authority to assume control and cancel, delay or terminate our events if there is a credible threat, hazard or incident. We are prepared to make any and all decisions and take any and all actions to ensure the safety of all concerned. We have been doing this for 126 years but the world has changed. We have changed in our preparations as a result.
In speaking with the Chief of Police for the City of Pasadena this morning, he wanted me to pass on his cell phone number and his office number should you need more information about the safety and security of the Punahou marching band members, staff and family during their trip to perform in America’s New Year Celebration to kick off 2016. Chief Phillip Sanchez is a good friend and his cell phone number is (xxx)xxx-xxxx. His office number is (xxx)xxx-xxxx. He and his staff have communicated and coordinated with the County Sheriff’s department, various state agencies and Department of Homeland Security among a few of the public agencies to ensure a safe event. Private entities in the business of information gathering and public safety are also being constantly consulted.
I hope this information will help the Punahou family in understanding that we put the safety of everyone involved with the Tournament of Roses as our highest priority. I hope you enjoy a meaningful Christmas and I am looking forward to seeing the Buff and Blue marching down Colorado Boulevard on the first. Please feel free to call me in the event you have any further questions or concerns.
Aloha nui loa,
Rich
